MovieStarPlanet is a fun and secure place on the web where children and youngsters participate in a virtual world with their own personalized Avatar and work together with their friends to create small animated cartoons, while also “living” their lives on the Moviestar Planet where they can shop, play games and do lots of other fun stuff and meet new friends
Developed together with leading educational authorities, MovieStarPlanet has several learning elements embedded into the game, for example allowing children to enhance their expressive language skills when making movies. The social element is a key part of the game, hence MovieStarPlanet could be described as a blend of Facebook and YouTube for youngsters with a learning dimension added.
The core of the game is that each child creates a virtual movie star Avatar which is used in cartoons together with the Avatars created by their friends. The children can share their cartoons with each other and review each other's movies.
Based on the popularity of the cartoons, the virtual movie star will be awarded virtual fame and money, thus offering new possibilities in subsequent movies. The continuous progress of the virtual movie star provides MovieStarPlanet a substantial element of play and competition appealing to children.
MovieStarPlanet was intially developed with financial support from the Danish Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation and in cooperation with The Danish University of Education, and a number of elementary school teachers.
'Research has shown that children improve their language skills when they communicate and play online games in their spare time. MovieStarPlanet is a great online universe that gives children the opportunity to play, communicate and create while their language skills are improved.'
Associate Professor, PhD, Department of Curriculum Research at the Danish University of Education.
